plainhead ist ein Musikprojekt, das sich um Gitarre und zarte Sample-Loops dreht. Es bewegt sich zwischen den Grenzen eines Soloprojekts und eines kollektiven Bandprojekts – frei von Erwartungen und dennoch wie eine Band atmend, sowohl im Studio als auch live. Eingebettet in die DIY-Szene rund um ihr selbst gegründetes Plattenlabel „new basement“ versucht plainhead, ein Ethos einzubringen, das in der lokalen Musiklandschaft ihrer Heimatstadt München (DE) ungewöhnlich ist, und bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen experimentellem Rock und Pop.
Angefangen als verzerrungslastiges Shoegaze-Projekt, das ernsthafte und befremdliche Songs im Stil der 90er spielte, haben sie sich zu einer ruhigeren und akustischeren Formation gewandelt, in deren Mittelpunkt die Klänge von Klarinette und Melodica stehen. Besonders prägend waren die Alben von Yo La Tengo und The Notwist aus den frühen 00er Jahren.
Ihre erste Langspielplatte „I SPLIT MY ORGAN IN TWOS“ (2024) bietet 60 Minuten von Freak-Folk inspirierte Rockmusik, die aus den Lautsprechern eines Baumhauses für Teenager dröhnt – mal laut, mal sanft, aber immer rockig. Das neueste Album „You Are More Than A Thousand Words“ (2025) ist weniger großzügig, rockt nur in bestimmten kurzen Momenten und fällt dann wieder auseinander. Durch die Einbindung weiterer elektronischer Elemente und Samples werden die akustischen Klänge behutsam vom Computer wiedergegeben und münden schließlich in eine unkontrollierbare und surreale Konstellation, ähnlich den dunklen, schweren Wolken am Himmel. Und manchmal regnet es.

Started off as a distortion-heavy shoegaze project playing earnest and estranged 90s-like songs, they have shifted into a more quiet and acoustic outfit centered around the winds of the clarinet and melodica. Especially formative records were the albums of early 00s Yo La Tengo and The Notwist.
Their first full length recording ‘I SPLIT MY ORGAN IN TWOS’ (2024) is 60 minutes of freak folk inspired rock music blasting from the speakers inside a teenage treehouse, at times loud and at times mellow but at all times rock. The latest album ‘You Are More Than A Thousand Words’ (2025) is less generous, rocks only at certain slight moments and falls apart again. Introducing more electronic elements and sampling, the acoustic sounds are delivered carefully by the computer, ending up in a uncontrollable and surreal constellation similar to the dark and heavy clouds in the sky. And at some times it rains.
