Im Jahr 2016 veröffentlichte Xiu Xiu – mit dem Segen von David Lynch und Angelo Badalamenti – das überraschend erfolgreiche Album Plays the Music of Twin Peaks und ging damit auf Tournee (u.a. auch im damaligen Grammatikoff). Aus Respekt und Ehrfurcht vor der geliebten Serie beschloss die Band, das Konzertprojekt 2018 ruhen zu lassen. Nach dem kürzlichen und allzu frühen Tod von David Lynch erhielt die Band jedoch zahlreiche hochkarätige Anfragen, ihre Interpretation dieser ikonischen Musik wieder aufleben zu lassen. Doch anstatt sich einfach zu wiederholen, wollen Xiu Xiu dem künstlerisch extrem hohen Anspruch David Lynchs gerecht werden, ihn würdigen und sich weiterhin von ihm inspirieren lassen – und gehen deshalb noch einen Schritt weiter in die Tiefe.
ERASERHEAD XIU XIU ist ein neues Live-Konzert mit begleitendem Film. Es nutzt Field Recordings, eigens für das Konzert gebaute Instrumente, Orgel, modulare Synthesizer, Gesang, Taschenlampen, elektrische Störgeräusche und Elemente der Musique Concrète, um die bizarre Emotionalität, die zwiespältige Sexualität, die unerbittliche Dunkelheit und die einzigartige, beunruhigende Mondlandschaft dieses unglaublichen „Midnight-Movie“-Meisterwerks zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Das ursprüngliche Sounddesign und die Filmmusik von Alan Splet und Lynch dienen als Leitfaden für Xiu Xius klangliche Erweiterung – eine Reflexion darüber, wie die Band als Fans und Musiker von diesem Werk geprägt wurde. Der Originalfilm bildet den Ausgangspunkt für Xiu Xius visuelle Perspektive, durch die das Publikum von imaginärem, ungenutztem Zusatzmaterial der Band überwältigt und aufgewühlt wird.
Ist es eine kurzzeitige Kunstinstallation, eine in alle Richtungen explodierende Hommage an einen filmischen Triumph, ein Epitaph für ein Idol – und das alles in Form eines völlig neuen Werks? JA.
Ist es intensiv, eigenwillig, kurios und in die Schwärze der tiefsten Nacht gehüllt?

In 2016, Xiu Xiu – with the blessing of David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti – released the surprisingly successful album Plays the Music of Twin Peaks and went on tour (including a gig at what was then the Grammatikoff). Out of respect and reverence for the much-loved series, the band decided to put the concert project on hold in 2018. However, following the recent and all too early death of David Lynch, the band received numerous high-profile requests to revive their interpretation of this iconic music. But rather than simply repeating themselves, Xiu Xiu wish to live up to David Lynch’s extremely high artistic standards, pay tribute to him and continue to draw inspiration from him – and are therefore taking things a step further in depth.
ERASERHEAD XIU XIU is a new live concert accompanied by a film. It utilises field recordings, instruments built specifically for the concert, organs, modular synthesisers, vocals, torches, electrical noise and elements of musique concrète to express the bizarre emotionality, the ambivalent sexuality, the relentless darkness and the unique, unsettling lunar landscape of this incredible ‘midnight movie’ masterpiece.
The original sound design and film score by Alan Splet and Lynch serve as a guide for Xiu Xiu’s sonic expansion – a reflection on how the band, as fans and musicians, was shaped by this work. The original film forms the starting point for Xiu Xiu’s visual perspective, through which the audience is overwhelmed and stirred by the band’s imaginary, unused bonus material.
Is it a fleeting art installation, a tribute to a cinematic triumph that explodes in every direction, an epitaph for an idol – and all of this in the form of a completely new work? YES.
Is it intense, idiosyncratic, curious and shrouded in the blackness of the deepest night?
